The women's western belt is far more than a fashion accessory: it's a distillation of a culture, a relationship to nature and an aesthetic that has crossed decades without aging. From the American prairie to New York runways, it has reinvented itself while keeping the elements that define its identity — the wide strap, the handcrafted ornamentation, the dialogue between leather and metal.

The codes of western style for women

The women's western belt is recognisable by its distinctive style features. The strap is generally wider than a standard belt — between 40 and 60mm — and often decorated along its full length: floral embroidery in coloured thread, geometric perforations, motifs raised into the leather, side fringing or decorative studs. The buckle is proportioned to the strap and often ornamented too.

Dominant colours are warm, natural tones — cognac, tan brown, camel, tobacco — evoking the vegetable-tanned leather of saddles and horse harnesses. But versions in white, red or blue leather also exist, for more pop or festive takes on western style.

Characteristic craft techniques

Repoussé

Dampened leather is worked with special tools to create raised patterns — flowers, leaves, animals, Native American geometric motifs. This handcrafted work, often done by hand, gives western belts their one-of-a-kind or near-unique quality. The relief catches light differently depending on the viewing angle, bringing the strap to life.

Embroidery and lacing

Leather, cotton or silk thread can be sewn or laced through perforations in the strap to create coloured motifs. These techniques, inherited from Native American and Mexican traditions, bring a textile dimension to the leather piece and allow for very rich colour compositions.

Perforation

Holes arranged in regular patterns — flowers, stars, arabesques — create an openwork effect that visually lightens the strap and reveals the lining or backing in another colour underneath. These belts look particularly beautiful worn over light outfits or bright colours that show through the perforations.

Wearing it in contemporary outfits

Women's western style goes through recurring fashion revivals: the 1970s, the 1990s and the 2020s have all seen renewed interest in this register. On flare or bootcut jeans, an embroidered white blouse and thigh-high or ankle boots, the western belt is in its natural context. But it also works more unexpectedly: on a floral midi dress, it creates a deliberate style contrast; on an oversized blazer, it introduces a warm femininity into an androgynous piece.
