The fabric belt is the marriage of practicality and casual style. Lightweight, washable, resistant to the outdoors and available in a wide range of colours and patterns, it's the go-to belt for anything that doesn't call for the formality of leather — outdoor activities, casual outfits, travel, sports use.
Fabrics and their character
Canvas
A dense cotton or cotton-polyester blend fabric, canvas is the most common material for casual belts. Sturdy and slightly stiff, it holds its shape well and resists everyday wear. Canvas belts are often paired with polos, shorts and chinos in a preppy or classic casual style.
Woven nylon
More technical than canvas, woven nylon is waterproof, quick-drying and even more resistant. It's the material of choice for hiking, sports and outdoor belts. Woven nylon belts with a quick-release clip buckle or tactical buckle are especially popular in these settings.
Striped or patterned fabric
Striped fabrics — navy and white nautical stripes, madras checks, houndstooth — let you bring a graphic element into an outfit without resorting to printed clothing. A striped canvas belt on a beige chino with a white Oxford shirt is a classic of American preppy style.
Matching buckles
The fabric belt is rarely paired with a classic pin buckle — the combination works but feels out of register. Clip buckles, slide buckles or rectangular buckles in plastic or brushed brass suit the casual spirit of the material better. Some military or outdoor models use specific lever buckles that allow one-handed adjustment.
Easy care
One of the main advantages of the fabric belt is how easy it is to care for. Hand or machine washable at 30°C for cotton versions, rinseable for nylon versions. It doesn't mind moisture and dries quickly. For models with a metal buckle, remove the buckle before washing if possible, or check that it won't rust.
